Jason Wylie is just a regular guy: a struggling retail employee with a dead-in-the-water love life.
Big Mama is not so regular: a strangely intelligent four foot slug that Jason discovers giving birth in his washing machine. Jason forms a friendship with the odd progeny, an army of shape-shifting creatures slavishly devoted to him.
Drowning, he wakes beside two corpses. His memory has been wiped clean. He doesn’t know his name, what he’s doing here, who these people are, or even why one of them is a cop. Nor can he explain his strange telekinetic abilities.
Questions plague his mind like hellfire, questions that begin a journey leading into the rot of downtown America, a journey that will not end until every one of his questions have been answered, despite who has to die in the process. Even if those who have all the answers aren’t human.
Even if the true monster he's hunting for is staring at him through the mirror.
It's the 1950s. There's always something good on the radio, cherry red Cadillacs cruise the streets and everything is always perfect. Marilyn is still alive and the War is over. America goes to bed, nuclear annihilation postponed another day.
Welcome to the American Nightmare.
Nuclear families dabbling in the occult. Little League games in the summer, old blood spilled in the dust. Unspeakable things hiss and crawl, unseen along the 38th parallel, camouflaged under muzzle flashes. This is what happens behind the white picket fences and waving flags.
Gina French is having a bad year. Fighting to retain custody of her daughter and struggling to pay the rent, the last thing that she needs is to painted as a scapegoat for the escape of a notorious serial killer. Presented with an opportunity to prove her critics wrong, she takes it.
Chain-smoking her way through fear, paranoia and violence as she hunts down the missing killer, those left behind wonder who the real Gina French is: a tragic single mother, fighting for a better future, or a bitter, narcissistic bitch, more interested in gold and glory than saving an innocent life?
In this collection of short stories Richard Thomas shows us in dark, layered prose the human condition in all of its beauty and dysfunction. A man sits in a high tower making tiny, mechanical birds, longing for the day when he might see the sky again. A couple spends an evening in an underground sex club where jealousy and possession are the means of barter.
These 20 stories will take you into the darkness, and sometimes bring you back.
A novella-length story of psychological terror set at a remote drug and alcohol rehabilitation center, RECOVERY is a story about one man's battle against demons inside and out. If you enjoy tales like The Shining, The Thing, or Jacob's Ladder, then RECOVERY is for you.
